Party Hats and WD-40: Vanlife Chronicles
Chapter 35: Birthday Steaks and Secret Workshops
Monday was my official induction into North West Arkansas social life: DJ’s birthday bash at Joe’s ranch. Picture this: 18 acres of hidden wonderland, kids who actually talk to adults instead of staring at screens, and a workshop so large it could hide a small army of tractors and boats (or a particularly ambitious circus). I went full human mode—pedicure, hair bun, makeup, and my fanciest vanlife outfit—because first impressions matter, especially when you’re representing yourself as the non-embarrassing half of your duo.
Dinner was steak (bliss!), sides prepared by Travis, and mac-and-cheese that could double as a dairy sculpture. I even contributed by supplying tomatoes from the van because apparently, logistics and dinner parties are my new jam. Ice cream cake followed, as if to remind me that sugar can indeed be weaponized. Post-feast, Joe gave us a tour of his mysterious “garage inside a garage” workshop empire, leaving me in awe and slightly terrified. Verdict: socializing in Arkansas is equal parts warmth, laughter, and mildly intimidating adult-sized Lego sets.
Chapter 36: Van Fixes and Singaporean Noodle Improvisation
Tuesday was all about recovery, repairs, and culinary experiments. First, I tackled the cassette toilet (because nothing says “glamorous vanlife” like scrubbing your portable bathroom under the sun) and then bravely faced the squeaky, wobbly dining table. Six screws and a generous spray of WD-40 later, I felt like a handyman champion, though slightly sun-drunk.
Lunch turned into a vanlife culinary adventure: mung bean vermicelli, eggs, shrimp, and curry powder magically transformed into a “look-alike” Singaporean noodle dish. Not exactly textbook, but when the heat is on and the pantry is limited, improvisation is the secret sauce of survival. Vanlife lesson learned: creativity and patience are essential, especially when you’re the only chef, repairperson, and general problem-solver in a 130-square-foot mobile home.
I love the hair!
